Biography
A wise man once said "There's no such such thing as a bad beer, just beers that are better than others." While that may not be strictly true, trying and comparing is half the fun. And if you don't take it too seriously, you just might learn something as well. No opinion here is wrong, no matter who is telling their story.

Beez Neez (Brewed by: Matilda Bay Brewing - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.00
Comments: Quite possibly the worst beer on the planet. Unlike VB or Carlton Draught, which are bad beers but at least inoffensive, this vile stuff is rancid.

Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Not the worst beer in the country. For a macro, it has a nice, clean crisp taste. Good for summer BBQs.

Fosters Lager (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 4.50

West End Draught (Brewed by: South Australian Brewing - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.00
Comments: Vying with Beez Neez for the title of the country's worst beer. Must be the Adelaide water.

Emu Bitter (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 1.50

Cascade Lager (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.25
Comments: I presume this is the Cascade 'Blue' that can only be bought in southern Tasmania? Not the worst beer, but nothing I'd be recommending either.

Cascade Draught (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 5.75
Comments: Probably my favourite macro and unfortunate that it is available only in Tasmania. Won't be realeased on the mainland any time soon as CUB doesn't want it to compete with VB and Carlton Draught. Nice easy-going beer best enjoyed from the tap although equally as enjoyable when served ice cold from the bottle. gets a bit skunky when allowed to go warm though.

Cascade Premium Light (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 4.25
Comments: Best light beer around. Love the new labels on the bottle too.

Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 4.75
Comments: Packs bit more of a punch than Boags Draught, but slightly sweeter, which I prefer the draught.

Coopers Original Pale Ale (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 5.50

Coopers Sparkling Ale (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 7.25
Comments: Perhaps the most dependable beer in Oz. Slightly too high on alcohol content for my liking, but Coopers Sparkling is still one of the best.

VB Original Ale (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Way better than macro VB, but not something to go out of your way for

Victoria Bitter (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 4.00
Comments: Pretentious types will tell you this is filth. Truth lies somewhere in between. No, it's not an award winner, but when you can't afford to drink $75 cartons and you are having a BBQ on a warm summer's evening with your mates, then there can be a time and a place for a VB.

Carlton Draught (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.25
Comments: Awful. I'd rather a VB than this shite.

Carlton Sterling (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)

Guinness (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 3.00
Comments: Go to Ireland and have a pint this and then come back home and try it. You will never drink it again. In Ireland, it is smooth rich and creamy. Here, it tastes like strong coffee.

Little Creatures Pale Ale (Brewed by: Little Creatures - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 9.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 7.50
Comments: Wonderful aroma. You can almost taste the fruit just by smelling. Good fruity beer that is best enjoyed in warm weather.

Rogers Beer (Brewed by: Little Creatures - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 9.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 7.75
Comments: Simply a wonderful beer. When this 3.8% alcohol variety outdoes its bigger brother (the pale ale) then you know the brewers got something right.

Little Creatures Pilsner (Brewed by: Little Creatures - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.50

Redback Original (Brewed by: Matilda Bay Brewing - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 4.25
Comments: This used to be much better than what it is today. Mere shadow of its former self.

Boags Strongarm Bitter (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 4.25
Comments: This is at least what the label says it is - bitter. Not bad and packs a punch.

Bohemium Pilzner (Brewed by: Matilda Bay Brewing - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 5.75
Comments: Not bad. Reasonable attempt at a beer I don't normally give much time to.

Cascade Pale Ale (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: One of the most unpredictable beers I have ever encountered. Some days it tastes incredibly good. On other days I simply cannot drink it. Don't know why. Perhaps I'm just a fussy bastard. On tap, it's quite refreshing, but get a bad bottle (and don't even think about drinking a can) and I will almost vomit.

Cascade First Harvest Ale (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 4.00

Wills Pils (Brewed by: Bootleg Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Not a fan of pilsners but this wasn't bad at all.

Settlers Pale Ale (Brewed by: Bootleg Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 5.50
Comments: Reasonable attempt at a pale ale in the Oz sense of the genre.

Toms Brown Ale (Brewed by: Bootleg Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 4.75
Comments: Not a fan of brown ales and this is the reason why it rates so low. It's probably a very decent beer though, not my cup of tea.

Holgate White Ale (Brewed by: Holgate Brewhouse - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 9.00Taste: 9.00Drinkability: 9.00Total: 8.75
Comments: Australia's best wheat beer. Indeed it is one of life's simple pleasures to sit in the beer garden at the Holgate Brewhouse in Woodend on a fine warm evening with a glass of this brilliant creation.

Natural Blonde (Brewed by: Grand Ridge Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 6.75
Comments: One of the better wheat beers going around. Nowhere near as good as Holgate's version, but this isn't bad. Nice on tap if you can find it (Wye River pub was the last time I had it on draught). I bit too carbonated though.

Hat Lifter Stout (Brewed by: Grand Ridge Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 8.00
Comments: Lovely stout.

Hightail Ale (Brewed by: Mountain Goat - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 7.25
Comments: Very decent beer although it tastes completely different when drinking from the bottle compared to on tap. I prefer the tap version, which is thicker in texture.

Surefoot Stout (Brewed by: Mountain Goat - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 8.00
Comments: One of the better 'watery' stouts. This has a lovely coffee taste with a hint of burnt toast linerging on the finish.

Cascade Premium Lager (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Used to be much, much better, but they lowered the alcohol content slightly to avoid paying as much tax and the product suffered because of it. I used to make this beer my little treat, but I rarely have it nowadays. What else would you expect from CUB?

Cascade Bitter (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 4.25
Comments: Inferior to Cascade Draught but very similar. Perhaps a bit harder edged than draught. Decent though.

Pure Blonde (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.25
Comments: Pure blonde? Pure filth.

Tooheys Extra Dry (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 4.00
Comments: I swear they changed this beer somewhere along the way. I used to drink buckets of the stuff in summer. Best dry beer in Oz by a mile, but I reckon they changed the recipe or the brewing process and now it is virtually undrinkable. Anyone else feel the same way or am I going nuts?

Red Bitter (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 2.00
Comments: Very average

Southwark Bitter (Brewed by: South Australian Brewing - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 3.50
Comments: Very bitter (well at least they don't lie). Not a nice drop.

Carlton Premium Dry (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 3.25
Comments: Only ydrink this if it is free and you don't want to offend your host. Not completely undrinkable but don't expect to get a lot of enjoyment out of it either.

Hahn Witbier (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Not the worst attempt by a macro brewery. Drinkable, but doesn't stack up when compared to Holgate.

James Squire Colonial Wheat Beer (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 6.75
Comments: Very, very good version of my preferred style of beer.

Boags Honey Porter (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 3.50
Comments: Awful version of a honey porter (what is a bloody honey porter anyway?). This is definitely no porter and the honey taste is more like a rancid bee's fart. I would consider taking legal action on San Miguel for deception.

Carlton Black (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 5.75
Comments: Very decent CUB creation (not something that I say very often).

Cascade Special Stout (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 9.00Taste: 9.00Drinkability: 8.50Total: 8.63
Comments: Best stout oin this fair country by so far it's not worth rating the others. Beautiful balance of coffee and burnt toast with a slight hint of chocolate. Truly a wonderful beer for the winter months in the southern states.

Coopers Best Extra Stout (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 6.00
Comments: Not bad but when stacked to Cascade's version I don't rate this much. Others swear this is better than Cascade though so each to their own. Not as bitter as Cascade. Decent drop though.

Hahn Premium Light (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 3.00
Comments: Not a bad version of crisp, dry light lager. I prefer the Cascade version, but wouldn't knock this back at all. Not great, but not awful.

Hahn Premium (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 4.75
Comments: Not bad but I rarely drink this. There's just something to it that just lacks something somewhere. Perfectly acceptable, but I expect more when I fork out $45 for a carton.

James Boags Premium Light (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Really good on tap if you can find it (almost impossible outside Tassie), but not quite as good bottled. Good attempt at a light beer though. Not as good as Cascade, but better than Hahn.

James Squire Original Amber Ale (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: I like amber ales and this one's highly drinkable, but it's just lacking something that says 'Keep drinking me.'

James Squire Original Pilsener (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.75
Comments: Awful version of the worst style of beer you can get. Truly abyssmal effort from one of the country's better breweries.

Tooheys Old (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: Dependable and a beer you always have every once in a while. Strangely, I prefer Carlton Black to this, but an Old should never be something to scoff at.

Tooheys Pils (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 5.50Total: 5.38
Comments: Not a bad attempt at a pilsner considering I usually hate the stuff. If I were drinking an Oz pils, I'd go for this.

Classic Bitter (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 3.75
Comments: OK if you're forced to drink it but not a beer of choice. As far as cold filtered crap goes, this is better than Carlton Cold, but, hey, almost anything's better that Carlton Cold.

Gippsland Gold Pale Ale (Brewed by: Grand Ridge Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 6.75
Comments: Perfectly acceptable beer, but it's price range doesn't justify it. Nice floral aroma, but nothing to rave about.

Fosters Light Ice (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 1.75
Comments: when low alcohol beer really caught on in this country, this was all the rage. noawadys the only people who drink are old men who don't know any better. in fact i swear the only person i know who drinks this stuff is my great uncle and he died a month ago. i wonder if the cause of death was from consumin Fosters Light Ice?

Blue Bitter (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 1.50Total: 2.13
Comments: This used to be half decent when it had a malty, copper taste and was dark in colour. Alas, they changed the alcohol content to make it even lower to avoid paying as much tax and in the process destroyed the stuffd

Carlton LJ (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 1.50
Comments: OK folks, let's get one thing straight. If you need to reduce your waistline, then get off your arse, start eating fresh fruit and veg and give the booze a miss for a while. The stuff is a joke. At 120cals a bottle, it is only 20 cals less than, say, a VB and is 20ml less and 0.3% alcohol volume less. I'm no rocket scientist, but put this in a 375ml bottle like VB and it would be exactly the same colories. Stupid gimmick and bordering on flase advertising.

Holgate Brewhouse Mt Macedon Ale (Brewed by: Holgate Brewhouse - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 6.00
Comments: I can't fidn anything bad to say about this creation but it just doesn't rock my world either. Perhaps it was the warm 35 degree day that I tried it at the brewery. The heat just didn't go well with htis number, which would be best enjoyed in winter.

Holgate Brewhouse Old Pale Ale (Brewed by: Holgate Brewhouse - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 6.50Taste: 5.50Drinkability: 6.00Total: 6.00
Comments: Nice drop, but lacked that knockout blow that made me want to get another one. Entry to the mouth is light and zesty but the aftertaste was a bit sickly.

Holgate Brewhouse Winter Ale (Brewed by: Holgate Brewhouse - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 5.50Drinkability: 6.00Total: 6.38
Comments: Quite a big, robust beer that was surprisingly easy to drink. Poured into a pot glass which was probably my own fault. Nice flavour, but I reckon three or four would be my limit.

Ice Beer (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.00

Carlton Midstrength (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: November 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 4.50
Comments: I'm a little bit embarrassed to say that I actually don't mind this beer. Can't believe I'm admitting this. It has a reasonable copper taste and although the Pride of Ringwood hops are evident, it certainly lives up to what it says it is - hoppy. Look..it's not great, but it's not too bad either. For a midstrength, I think it's one of the better macros. i'm going to go and hide now.
