Tooheys New (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.75
Comments: This beer is the epitamy of all that is wrong with commercial beer. It is weak, the hop flavour is artificial, and the beer exhibits a strong chemical aftertaste. After having drunk this beer for years, I can now honestly say: this is the beer that drove me to homebrew. And I've never looked back.

Victoria Bitter (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: November 1999)
Colour: 0.50Aroma: 0.30Taste: 0.50Drinkability: 1.00Total: 0.58
Comments: How could anyone go past "Green Death." Bad out of a stubby, worse from the tap, and I cannot even come up with a way of describing the canned form. If this is Australia's favourite beer, then Australia must love splitting headaches the day after. It does have one good feature- at least it is not Budweiser.

Carlton Draught (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.75
Comments: This beer works. It doesn't taste great, but at least it tries hard. If anybody asked me my opinion about it, I would say "at least it's cheap."

Cascade Premium Light (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 7.25
Comments: Finally! A light beer that does not taste light. Nor does it result in frequent visits to the facilities (or back alley- for those of you in WA). Lightly, but very pleasantly hopped, this beer provides the drinker with a crisp, full-flavoured alternative to full-strength beer.

Hahn Premium Light (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 2.75
Comments: A real hit for those who like to urinate. This beer runs through you like a Fijian front-rower. It is a great beer if you are looking to lose weight, as frequent trips to the facilities will be in order.

Fosters Lager (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.25
Comments: Firstly let me say, I have had worse. I, on the behalf of the Fosters marketing director, wish to apologise to all Australians, for the claim of this being "Australian for beer." I can actually think of many things that Foster's Lager is Australian for, but beer is not featured highly amoungst the contenders. A palid, straw-coloured, chemically-flavoured disaster is all that I experienced. This incipid brew had all the realism of a 1960's Barbie doll. The overall result of this "lager," is a beer very reminicent of a bubble-bath. Actually, I think I know what I would drink in preference. There is one good point though. At least it isn't Budweiser.

Coopers Original Pale Ale (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 9.00Total: 8.00
Comments: This is a very easy to drink ale, with a magnificent versatility. This is the perfect beer for both seasoned beer-drinking vets, and occasional beer drinkers. There is a near-perfect balance between the big flavour, counter-balanced with a subtle spicyness , for the more discerning palate. This combined with a delicate hoppyness, results in a fine beer. I doubt that any beer drinker could say that they did not enjoy this particular ale.

Coopers Sparkling Ale (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 7.25
Comments: This is an ale without a peer, simply due to its unusual characteristics. Firstly, sparkling ale is an Australian rarity. Secondly, unlike its "little brother" Coopers Pale Ale, it has quite a kick in the alcohol content. It produces an excellent fine beady head when correctly poured, and has a resonating fruity flavour. Unfortunately it can become hard to drink after two, due to the tendency toward an esterific aftertaste.

James Squire Original Amber Ale (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 9.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 7.00
Comments: This is by far the best in the James Squire collection. Much more robust than any of the others. The red/gold colour belies the depth of flavour expected from an amber ale. Very creamy head, and an aftertaste of roasted hazelnut.

Carlton Empire Lager (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 1.50
Comments: Well done Carlton! You actually managed to make a version of Carlton Cold that was even worse! I didn't think that it was possible, but here it is. To say that it tastes like it came from a camel with syphilis, is an insult to syphilic camels everywhere. From the nasty yellow colour (well indicated by the clear bottle), to the soapy detergentesque head, this is the beer of Bacardi Breezer drinkers. Late hopped? I think the hops were so late that they missed "processing" (I don't believe that this chemically-flavoured liquid was actually brewed). Surely someone at CUB lost their job for letting this one get out.

Carlton Cold (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 2.00
Comments: This is a hard beer to comment on, simply because you are not sure if you actually drank it. It is like jumping into a pool, but coming out dry. If you like beer, avoid at all costs. If your girlfriend wants to try beer, but hates the hop flavour, this will do the trick. A thoroughly disappointing 'beer'???

Tooheys Maxim (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 2.50
Comments: This is an attempt to mimic the popular 'light' beers of the USA. This results in something that is just plain awful. The memory of the flavour still brings tears to my eyes. If you really want to lose weight, just chop off an arm or something. You'll thank me in the long run.

James Squire India Pale Ale (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 9.00Total: 6.50
Comments: A touch watery. The taste is that little bit too thin. This isn't helped by very light carbonation. The result is a thinly flavoured beer that flattens too quickly due to lack of head. The maltyness is great though- decent mouthfeel, well balanced by the overall bitterness. A good Christmas day beer.

Cascade Premium Lager (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 6.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 9.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 7.00
Comments: This is simply a good beer. Tastes good, and can be enjoyed with one beer, or six. It is as good as the light, with a slight boost in the fullness of flavour. One of the nicest hop varieties around too. Well worth drinking.

Tooheys Pils (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 3.00
Comments: This was the first "pilsner" I ever had. At this point I decided that I hated pilsner. Since then, after discovering the wonders of homebrew, I now realise that this is not actually a pilsner. Saaz hops does not a pilsner make. Shame Tooheys, shame. Don't waste your money on this garbage. If you want a pilsner, Little Creatures or homebrew only!

Coopers Vintage Ale (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 10.00Taste: 10.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 8.75
Comments: This is a ale of the ages. Treat it with respect, and it will give your palate a complexity of flavours so rarely found in comercial ales. Some drinkers would disagree with me, but I personally believe that each vintage is different, and have subtle variations in character, but are linked by one common thread- this is a BIG beer. I would suggest only drinking this when you have time to savour it to the fullest extent. I would also suggest that you should only buy it if it has not been refrigerated, as it is even better if stored for at least another six to twelve months. This ale never disappoints with its citrus/cinnamon tonings and delicate off-white head. Deliciously cloudy, and must be drunk from an wide-mouthed glass

Carlton Sterling (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.25
Comments: Flavourless. A distinct resemblence to old bathwater in the aftertaste. A complete waste of Pride of Ringwood and Saaz hops- my two favourites. This beer sure has "unique character," but in this case, is that a good thing?

Tooheys Old (Brewed by: Tooheys - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 6.50
Comments: Good, but used to be better. It is the best dark beer that you'll get on tap in most places.

Hahn Premium (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 5.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 6.75
Comments: Beautiful straw colour. Easy to start drinking, easy to finish the night with. One of the better lagers in Australia

Beez Neez (Brewed by: Matilda Bay Brewing - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 9.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 7.50
Comments: I cannot get through two. It just won't happen. But that one that I have is damn good! It is a good change, and the wheat malt gives it a good mouthfeel. Also hard to go past Pride of Ringwood hops!

James Squire Colonial Wheat Beer (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 8.00
Comments: Deliciously cloudy! Aside from that, I personally despise this beer when young. Give it time and it will treat you well. When aged, the unpleasant saccarine flavours disappear, leaving a delicious, mellow, mature beer. This is not one for warm weather.

Little Creatures Pale Ale (Brewed by: Little Creatures - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 9.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 8.00Total: 8.00
Comments: This is simply a good pale. Nothing beats a mango aroma! Very bitter, and very fruity.

Boags XXX Ale (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: November 1999)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 4.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 5.25
Comments: This beer is hard work. This is a tough ale. Very, very big. Great taste, but I can't get through more than two.

Boags Draught (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 6.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 4.25
Comments: This beer smells like that time that you woke up on the floor of a dodgey pub that you don't even remember going to. Tastes ok, but I can't get past that dirty smell.

James Boags Premium Lager (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 4.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 3.75
Comments: A mouthful of soil would taste cleaner than this particular beer. Damn hard to differentiate between this and Fosters. This is a beer for the true "boag"ans

Cascade First Harvest Ale (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 5.50
Comments: This is like drinking a supermodel- very nice, but the body is just too thin. Very nice balance between maltiness and hoppiness, with a magnificent coppery colour.

Crown Lager (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.00
Comments: This is just awful. This liquid is living proof that some Australians will drink anything. Not only that, but they will pay money for it. If I were in a desert dying of thirst, I would take my chances rather than drink this chemically flavoured muck. Beer is meant to be good, hence, this is not beer!

James Squire Australian Strong Ale (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 7.25
Comments: Nice. There is nothing more to say.

James Squire Porter (Brewed by: Malt Shovel Brewery - Reviewed: November 1999)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 6.00Total: 7.00
Comments: Not at all bad. Just remember, it's not really a beer, it's a porter. Very smooth, dark and chocolatey. Nicely hopped too.

Little Creatures Pilsner (Brewed by: Little Creatures - Reviewed: August 2005)
Colour: 7.00Aroma: 8.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 9.00Total: 8.00
Comments: Very easy to drink. Very subtle flavours, with mild hopping, and a fresh, crisp taste. Good mouthfeel. Really it is very simple- if you want an Australian pilsner, drink this. Do not even think about touching toohey's pils.

Southwark Bitter (Brewed by: South Australian Brewing - Reviewed: September 2005)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 2.50
Comments: This beer may be the reason as to why it is the "only remaining example of the Australian primed bitter style." If it epitamises that particular style, then maybe it is a style best laid to rest. It is like sucking spilt beer out of a bar-runner that hasn't been washed in several months. I recommend drinking this beer only if you have had a recent tetanus shot.

Tooheys Extra Dry (Brewed by: Lion Nathan - Reviewed: September 2005)
Colour: 1.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 3.00
Comments: Confuscius say: "beer that comes in clear bottles should not look like it was pissed in by the Bundy Bear." Aside from that, this beer is a generic fizzy drink, suitable for 15 year olds who want to get wasted.

Birell (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 5.00Drinkability: 5.00Total: 5.00
Comments: For a start, the colour is disturbing. It's like watching goldfish swim in a schooner of urine- not that that is something I have seen before. The smell is reminiscent of rotting vegetation, but the taste is suprisingly clean. At 99c a can, it's a good beer.

VB Original Ale (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 2.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 2.75
Comments: Well done Carlton, you have done it! Finally you have managed to make an artificial ale. This just tastes like carlton draught and VB mixed together. Congratulations are in order for blessing us with "traditional kettle hopping method," instead of adding a barrel full of tetrahopping agent. Adding hops to the brew, to actually make beer for a change. I was as surprised as the next homebrewer.

Boags St George (Brewed by: J Boag and Son - Reviewed: October 2005)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.50
Comments: Commercialism gone mad. Why, oh why, do people fall for these marketing gimmicks? A 4-pack! That must mean it's the best beer in the world!!! Therefore I must be a beer connoisseur if I buy, and be seen consuming this beer (preferably in a trendy nightspot). St George... that sounds impressive too. I'm sold- it MUST be the best beer in the world. Get a grip people, this is sold in 4-packs in order to appear like it is a premium product, when all it is, is a cheap and flavourless imitation of Carlton Empire Lager (which is hardly worth imitating). It means that they can charge more for less. They can actually sell the run-off from the vat cleaning process, in special bottles, and charge twice as much for it. Somewhere in the Boags administration, an executive just got promoted for this. It's sad really.

Crackenback Pale Ale (Brewed by: Bluetongue Brewery - Reviewed: February 2006)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 4.00Total: 3.00
Comments: What is going on? "Brewed with the pristine waters of the Snowy River?" Isn't it lucky that the Snowy River runs straight through the NSW Central Coast. Another example of trying to market a very average beer as premium. No great suprise though, from a brewery that regularly produces flavours similar to that of their roadkilled namesake.

Bluetongue Ginger Beer (Brewed by: Bluetongue Brewery - Reviewed: February 2006)
Colour: 3.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 2.00
Comments: If you like ginger beer, avoid this product at all costs. Having enjoyed many alcoholic ginger beers over the years, I struggle to find many that even come close to a good ginger bite. This is no exception. The ginger taste is remarkably tame, with the brewers tending toward the 'sickly' and esterific flavours commonly found in your average 'chick drink.' The memory alone makes me reach for the listerine.

RESCHS Pilsener (Brewed by: Fosters Group - Reviewed: February 2006)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 1.25
Comments: It hurts to drink this stuff. This is one vile liquid.

Coopers Best Extra Stout (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: July 2006)
Colour: 9.00Aroma: 7.00Taste: 8.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 7.75
Comments: A beautifully coloured beer. Nice esterific flavour, with plenty of mouthfeel. A joy to drink on a cold night.

Coopers Dark Ale (Brewed by: Coopers Brewery - Reviewed: July 2006)
Colour: 8.00Aroma: 6.00Taste: 7.00Drinkability: 7.00Total: 7.00
Comments: A dark beer that is very easy to drink. Not all that much aroma, but plenty of flavour. Another cold night favourite.

Cascade Pale Ale (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: July 2006)
Colour: 5.00Aroma: 3.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 1.00Total: 3.00
Comments: The only thing that makes this a pale ale, is the colour. Come on. It's not that hard to make a good genuine pale.

Cascade Amber Ale (Brewed by: Cascade Brewery - Reviewed: July 2006)
Colour: 4.00Aroma: 2.00Taste: 3.00Drinkability: 3.00Total: 3.00
Comments: I feel that this is a crime against amber ales. It is amberish in colour, but where is the full malty body, and soft- but bitter hop flavour. Why must all megaswill 'ales' use corn or rice starch to water themselves down.

XXXX Gold (Brewed by: Castlemaine Perkins - Reviewed: July 2006)
Colour: 2.00Aroma: 1.00Taste: 1.00Drinkability: 2.00Total: 1.50
Comments: I've never worked out the 'rivalry' of sorts between XXXX and Tooheys. They all taste primarily the same. Basically, that means that this beer falls into the 'why bother' category.
