Townsville Brewing Company

Score 1.83

Townsville was once home to two breweries. Messrs Martin and Son established the City Brewery in 1886 on Charters Towers road and supplied beer and stout to Townsville and the surrounding area. The second brewery was owned by Allen and Lanfear Limited and was known as the “Lion Brewery” in 1894 (currently known as the old Playpen building). By 1899 it was being referred to as the “Townsville Brewery”. It used to be thought that good beer could not be brewed in tropical climates and Brewmaster S.G. Elliot of the “Townsville Brewery Company” set out to dispel this myth. The beers brewed by Elliot quickly gained reputation and “from their own merit came into such favour that Townsville beer and porter was gradually but surely driving other colonial brews out of the local market”. A permanent display case in the brewery mangers office was said to hold all the cups and medals that the brewery had won through out the years. Re-established in 2001 the Townsville Brewing company is brewing beer with the same passion and commitment to quality that ensured success in the late 1800’s.
